My Personalised Cookbook started as a wedding gift. Here's how it became something more.
Our story
I wanted to give my sister something special for her wedding. A friend of mine had once made a handwritten cookbook for a birthday - recipes, photos and memories gathered from everyone who loved them - and I couldn't stop thinking about it. I'm not especially artsy, though, so I decided to make a digital version and have it printed. I asked friends and family to each send in a recipe that reminded them of the couple, along with a photo and a song.
I quickly realised how much work I'd taken on. There was chasing contributions, keeping track of who had and hadn't sent theirs, and then somehow pulling it all together into something that looked good. I'm not very creative, and laying out every page by hand was slow and frustrating. With help from a more creative friend I got there in the end - but it was far harder than it needed to be.
I gave the book to my sister and her now-husband at a family BBQ the night before the wedding, and the moment they opened it made it all worthwhile. Everyone who'd contributed crowded round, wanting to find their own page and see everyone else's. And they all said the same thing: how great it was, and that they wanted to make one for someone special to them.
So we built My Personalised Cookbook to make the whole thing easy. You shouldn't need design skills or hours of manual work to create something this meaningful - just a simple way to bring people's recipes and memories together, without the hassle.
